Before you sell: 5 steps to get a fair price

  1. 1Sort by karat. Check the stamp on each piece (10K, 14K, 585, 750…) and group them, because each karat is priced differently.
  2. 2Weigh in grams. A kitchen scale that reads to 0.1 g is good enough. Remove stones and non-gold parts where you can; they don't count as gold.
  3. 3Know your melt value. Enter each group in the calculator above so you know what the gold itself is worth before anyone makes an offer.
  4. 4Get at least three quotes. Offers from pawn shops, local dealers and online refiners can differ by 30% or more for the same gold.
  5. 5Compare offers as a percentage. Divide each offer by your melt value. Around 70–90% is common for scrap; well below that means you should keep shopping.

Watch for plated-gold marks

If a karat stamp appears next to any of these marks, the item has only a thin gold layer and is worth far less than its weight suggests:

  • GP (gold plated)
  • GE / EP (electroplated)
  • HGE / HGP (heavy gold electroplate)
  • RGP (rolled gold plate)
  • GF (gold filled)
  • Vermeil

Frequently asked questions

How is the value of gold calculated?

Melt value = weight in grams × purity × spot price per gram. Purity is the karat divided by 24, so 14k gold is 58.3% pure. The spot price is quoted per troy ounce (31.1035 g).

How much will a buyer actually pay for my scrap gold?

Buyers pay a share of the melt value to cover refining and profit. Pawn shops often pay 50–70%, while online refiners and good local dealers commonly pay 70–90%. Use the slider to see what different offers mean in dollars.

What is pennyweight (dwt)?

Pennyweight is a jewelry trade unit. 1 dwt = 1.555 grams, and 20 dwt make one troy ounce. Many gold buyers quote prices per dwt.

Is a troy ounce the same as a regular ounce?

No. A troy ounce is 31.1 grams, about 10% heavier than a regular (avoirdupois) ounce of 28.35 grams. Gold prices are always quoted in troy ounces.

How often is the gold price updated?
